The final design was to create a mixture of the collected soil and add by weight the stabalizing element. There would be three brick sets that would be tested to compare strength and make adjustments to mix designs.
The First Mix: "Control"
The first mix was made to determine how the soil types compared against eachother. The purpose of this test was to determine the soil type with the least user benefit so that it could be eliminated from further testing. The elimination of a soil type allowed the team to narrow the strength results.
The Second Mix: "Cement"
The choosen stabalizers to be compared for strength were cement and cement kiln dust. Unfortunately the cement stabelizer was not used due to a purchasing error which meant the second mix was neglected from final analysis.
The Third Mix: "Cement Kiln Dust"
Cement Kiln Dust (CKD), a cementitious byproduct of cement production, was choosen as a stabalizer due to the reduced environmental impact of use versus cement. The CKD was donated by our technical advisor and the results of the tests can be seen on the Project Information page of this website. Results of compression tests for High Desert showed a passing grade according to the New Mexico Building Code.
